It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that the Society for Free Radical Research announces the passing of our esteemed colleague, former councillor, and beloved mentor, Prof. Luis Alfonso del Río.
Prof. del Río was a pioneering colossus in the field of plant biochemistry and free-radical physiological research. Based at the Estación Experimental del Zaidín (CSIC) in Granada, Spain, his laboratories made seminal molecular discoveries into reactive oxygen species, dismutases, and nitric oxide pathways in plant cells. His research group was among the first in Europe to accurately localize superoxide dismutases (SOD) inside peroxisomes, rewriting foundational biology texts.
